The fashion industry provides the world with a full calendar of events. From runway shows to trade shows, the fashion world knows how to keep busy. But which events are not to be missed? As most things in the world, not all fashion events are created equal. Some events just top the hot list year after year. Here is a list of the top ten annual fashion events to attend, or at least dream of attending.
10. Pitti Immagine
Pitti Immagine is an organization of trade shows for men, women and children’s fashion held annually in Florence. The Pitti Immagine Uomo is considered one of the annual highlights of the menswear fashion calendar. During this trade show Pitti showcases over 1,000 different brands. At the women’s fashion version, Pitti W, they showcase over seventy women’s brands. Pitti Immagine focuses on high quality Italian design. This event held in Italy’s original fashion capital Florence, has over 30,000 visitors each year. This year’s Pitti Immagine was highlighted by visits from guest designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon of Kenzo and Opening Ceremony Fame according to Luxuo Luxury Blog.
9. Bread and Butter
Bread and Butter is held in Berlin and it is one of the industry’s most innovative trade shows of contemporary street style. Brands such as G-Star International BV, Diesel and Adidas, along with more than 600 other brands are showcased during this event. This trade show, started in 2001, is filled with concerts and art installations. Bread & Butter has become one of the top fashion events in Berlin and is held twice a year. 8. Milan Men’s Fashion Week
Milan Men’s Fashion Week has given men’s fashion the same kind of excitement previously only seen with women’s fashion. This event is keeping stylish men, women and the media buzzing. Milan had taken a hit after the news of Burberry and Alexander McQueen deciding to stop showing in Milan, and making the move to London. But the showcasing of collections by designers such as Prada, Giorgio Armani, Frankie Morello and Ermanno Scervino, men’s designer fashion has been taken to a new dimension at Milan Men’s Fashion Week. Milan is once again on the map.
7. CFDA Fashion Awards
The CFDA Fashion Awards, also known as the Fashion industry Oscars, this annual event recognizes individuals in the American Fashion Industry with awards for design excellence and extraordinary accomplishments in journalism and creative vision, according to the CFDA. There is also a lifetime achievement given each year. But the highlight of this award show is of course the red carpet. Stars and industry people dress to impress in the best of high fashion. It is not only an event; it is a star studded runway show.
6. ANDAM Fashion Awards
The Association Nationale pour le Développement des Arts de la Mode (National Association for the Development of the Fashion Arts) is a nonprofit association created in 1901. The ANDAM organizes an annual contest intended to recognize and introduce designers on to the French and international fashion scene, according to the ANDAM. The famous ANDAM Fashion Award was created 24 years ago by Nathalie Dufour, and judges on the panel include the likes of YSL co-founder, Pierre Bergé and Vogue Paris editor, Emmanuelle Alt. This award ceremony is a true fashion event, featuring some of the most famous faces in the French fashion industry. Previous winners of the award include Viktor and Rolf, Gareth Pugh and Martin Margiela.
5. London Fashion Week
The British Fashion Council (BFC) for the London Development Agency founded London Fashion Week. The first one took place in 1984. Alongside New York, Paris and Milan, London Fashion Week is known as one of the 'Big Four' fashion weeks. With designers as Burberry Prorsum, Matthew Williamson, Nicholas Kirkwood, Mulberry and Tom Ford, London Fashion Week has earned its place on the ‘Big Four’ list. London Fashion week not only showcases amazing designers, it is also known for being innovative and original. The London Fashion Week official website (www.londonfashionweek.co.uk) indicates that in spring of 2010, London Fashion Week became the first major fashion week to offer designers who were showing their collections the opportunity to broadcast their shows live on the Internet. In 2012 the first men’s collections were showed.
4. Milan SS Ready to Wear
Milan Fashion Week was established in 1958. During this week the events are dedicated to women's fashion, the most important being, Milan SS Women Ready to Wear and Milano Moda Donna according to the Milan Fashion Week official website. When most people think of Milan Fashion week, the Milan SS Ready to Wear runway shows come to mind and for good reason. Some of the most coveted ready to wear collections from the biggest names are shown during this event. Need some convincing on why this event deserves to be on the list? 3. New York Fashion Week
New York Fashion Week is the highlight of American Fashion. During Fashion Week in New York events are organized throughout the city to celebrate the city’s Fashion industry. The exclusive runway shows are the stage of great fashion inside the famous tents of Bryant Park, as well as outside the tents. The shows attract fashion industry legends like Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Tally, as well as Hollywood stars, famous fashion bloggers, and photographers from all around the world. Designers like Diane Von Furstenburg, Marc Jacobs, Prabal Gurung , Anna Sui, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors and Vera Wang showcase their collections during New York Fashion. There may not be a Fashion’s Night Out in 2013, but during New York Fashion Week there will be no shortage on fashion day or night.
2. Haute Couture Fashion Week
When it comes to the fashion world, Haute Couture Fashion Week is the epitome of creativity, aspiration and inspiration. This event is one of the fashion calendar’s biggest hits. During the Haute Couture week, a select group of designers team up with the finest crafters in Paris to produce one of a kind outfits that are unaffordable and unattainable for most.
Haute Couture Fashion week is much less of a catalog and more of a shop window for the design talents and technical skill of the designers. Chanel, Christian Dior SA, Jean Paul Gaultier, Viktor and Rolf and Maison Martin Margiela are a few members of this elite club of designers.
1. Paris Fashion Week Ready to Wear
The Ready to Wear or prêt-à-porter shows of Paris Fashion week are what fashion dreams are made of. During this event the most elaborate set of designers showcase their prêt-à-porter collections to the world. LVMH Moët Hennessy - Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, Balenciaga, Kenzo, Issey Miyake, Miu Miu, Givenchy, Balmain, Isabel Marant, Emanuel Ungaro, Valentino and Costume National are just some of the legendary designers that show at Paris Ready to Wear. Just by seeing a short list of the names of the designers, it can be said that Paris Fashion Week is and will always be the fashion event of the year.
