Raffaella Curiel was born in Italy. Daughter of the great Gigliola Curiel, who after the Second World War and especially during the sixties dressed the Milanese bourgeois and international aristocracy. Having been launched into the fashion world after a classical education, she began working in the French tradition under Pierre Balmain and under the watchful eye of her mother. From the outset she did things in her own way. Collections that symbolize a particular line, color or cut that may be trendy, she prefixes themes, which she then reinterprets in a modern way. It may be a tribute to a painter, writer, novelist or foreign country. She’s dedicated runway shows to Balla, Schiele, Klimt, Beardsley, Velasquez and Vermeer, and yet, to writer Victor Hugo or to India or Russia or Mexico of Frida Kahlo. A writer once noted: “She’s a women of a thousand faces, that could box in a circle and at the same time create the magic of the sphere. 1961 She begins working with her mother. 1965 She presents her first prêt-à-porter line a Bergdorf Goodman in New York. 1970 Opens her first boutique after her mother’s passing. 1971 Her first Haute Couture show, collaborates with Rosier, Lux Sport, Lux International for the prêt-à-porter. Creates textiles in Como for many stylists. 1975 Designs for Pacabù under a multi-year contract. 1986 She is invited to show in Rome (Haute Couture) and on the TV program “Women under the stars”. Since 1990 launches the first perfume branded Curiel and designs, eyeglasses, gloves, handbags, designer tiles, furs, and foulards. 1992 Opens her first New York Showroom. She later conducts a TV program entitled “Secrets for you” on State owned TV Rai. 1995 Launches her second perfume. 1996 She shows Haute Couture in Atlanta USA at the Olympic Games. She opens her first prêt-à-porter corner shop in Japanese retailer WACO Co. Ltd. 2000 She is chosen to dress the Airport Staff across the SEA managed airports across Europe. She also dresses the Milan Trade Fair Hostesses. Since 1993 along with her daughter Gigliola she continues to present prêt-à-porter and Haute Couture lines in Rome and throughout the world where her style is highly appreciated by her following and is sought out by newcomers as well. Raffaella Curiel has received the Grand Cross from The Italian Republic (among the highest civil honors), has been decorated with a Gold Medal from the City of Milan and a Gold Ambrogino as well as a Gold Medal also from the Province of Milan, a silver medal form the Province of Rome where she also received the Bronze Wolf award from the eternal city and Italian capital, Rome. This last award was bestowed upon her as official ambassador of Italian Fashion in the world. She has also been decorated with the following prestigious awards: The Ciotola Silver Prize (Rome), Adelaide Ristori Prize for great for lifelong career achievement, Silver medal (City of Milan), the Ala d’Oro del Successo International Prize (Milan), National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) Nomination, Female Prize for Valor (City of Milan), The Aidda Prize, Silver plaque (Province of Rome), The Giorgio Almirante Prize, The Piazza Mercanti prize awarded by the Milan Chamber of Commerce, and The Saint Giusto Gold Prize (City of Trieste). Since 1985 she is appointed Ambassador of Fashion to the most prestigious Italian embassies in the world including Peking, for the inauguration of The Route of Marco Polo World Fair, then in Dailan for the 50th anniversary of the Popular Republic of China, and again at the De Ajiuda Museum in Lisbon upon invitation from the President Mario Soares, and later to Berlin in as much as the first Italian Stylist to be invited after the unification of Germany. 2002 Upon official request from French Ambassador Jacques Blot, she dedicated a fashion show to Victor Hugo and show in Palazzo Farnese in Rome. Again in 2002 upon request from Nikolay Spasskiy the Russian Ambassador in Italy, she shows at Villa Abamelek, a collection entirely dedicated to St. Petersburg in the Presence of the Kremlin Ballet and Mr. Vladimir Putin Presidential Orchestra. 2004/05 Upon official request of Mrs. Moubarak, she shows in the Egyptian Capital. 2005 she was given the Rosa Camuna Prize for her Career from the President of the Region of Lombardy, Mr. Roberto Formigoni. 2006 she receives the Career Prize from the Major of Rome, Mr. Walter Veltroni who had invited her to show her collection at the Town Hall of Rome on January 31st 2006. 2006 she was given the Honor Certificate from Mr. Du Yuzhoui, President of the China National Textile Industry Association, after her fashion show during the China Fashion Week in Beijing 2007 she was given the Prize Maestro dell’Anno from the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Hall of Milan. In June 2008 she was given the Fondazione Marisa Bellisario Prize. In October 2008 she was given the Career Prize from the European High Fashion Chamber. In November 2008 she has been invited from the Chamber of Commerce of Milan and the Region Lombardia to present her High Fashion Collection dedicated to Frida Kahlo in Mexico City and Guadalajara during the inauguration of the Book International Fair where Italy was guest of honor. In February 2009, supported by the Italian Authority, she has presented in New York City her High Fashion Collection “ Homage to George Barbier “ during the Gala Italia. Please note that the brand, owned by the company Raffaela Curiel SRL, underwent liquidation in 2018.
