Phillip Lim launched his collection with start-up cash from friend and fabric supplier Wen Zhou in 2004. Almost overnight, his line became both a critical and commercial darling. Lim's coveted dresses were quickly spotted around town on "It" girls Natalie Portman and Kate Hudson, fueling demand upwards of $12 million wholesale by his third season. Approaching its fourth year, the collection is represented in 45 countries and available at nearly 400 boutiques and department stores worldwide. Spring 2007 the menswear collection was launched along with a freestanding retail store in New York City. In 2008, the 3.1 Phillip Lim children's wear collection was introduced. In June 2007 opening of the first free standing 3.1 Phillip Lim store on Mercer Street in New York City. The store, which carries the complete line of men's, women's, kid's, the organic Go Green Go collection and Accessories, established a foundation for plans of retail expansion both abroad beginning with an April 2008 Tokyo store opening, and domestically, with a Los Angeles, California, store opening in June 2008. 3.1 Phillip Lim's raison d'etre is making beautiful clothes with added touches of madness, striving toward the imperfection. The result is a collection of individual looks that are unexpected, unplanned, but completely relevant. Accordingly, Lim says, "3.1 is about clothes that refine instead of define women.
