In 1918 Philip Miller traveled to the Great American West on the advice of his doctor, and to sell hats for his family’s New York City based Miller Bros. hat company. Phillip Miller’s temporary stint in Denver evolved into a much greater journey- a lifelong love of the West and the creation of a western wear business that survives to this day.
As a traveling hat salesman, Phillip became close with the farmers, ranchers and rodeo cowboys that he met, and in addition to hats, began providing them with special items they would request. This experience provided the basis for the founding of his own Denver-based business, a mail order catalog originally operated as Stockman Farmer Supply Company. Although initially limited in scope, through time Stockman Farmer Supply grew to be one of the West’s premiere sources for western hats, boots, shirts, and horse tack. Phillip Miller is known as one of the first to commercially produce the classic western shirt, which with the advent of motion pictures became the now familiar distinctive Western look. Reflecting Miller’s continued success with ranchers, in 1942 the business’ name was changed to Miller Stockman. In 1950, Miller opened his first Miller Stockman western store in Denver, Colorado. At the time of their sale 49 years later in 1999, there were more than 30 stores in 5 western states.
Ninety years after Phillip Miller arrived in the West we are pleased to provide you with the Miller Ranch™ Collection. The Miller Ranch™ brand reflects a western lifestyle that is uniquely American. The items that we now bring to you are based on the traditions and values that made the Miller name a significant part of the history of the American West.
