In 1898 the chemist Hans Schwarzkopf ran a small drugstore "The Dye, Drug and Perfume Outlet" in Berlin. This store created the foundation of the worlds largest hair-cosmetics businesses. Five years later, he developed the "Shampoo with the Black Head" (from German "Schwarz" for black and "kopf" for head); the first water-soluble powder shampoo ever produced. It became an immediate bestseller and was even exported to Russia. The real international breakthrough came in 1927 when he launched the first liquid shampoo and the first hair conditioner.
